At a recent group retreat we shared AI tips and tricks:
- Don’t forget all the cool stuff in Google NotebookLM, including making podcasts to listen to on the train, in the gym, or while doing the laundry.
- You can make agents with Copilot (depending on your Microsoft licence) — potentially useful for building chatbots for teaching.
- Keep the ethical, societal, and environmental aspects in mind, and learn about them.
- Temporary chat is a useful ChatGPT feature — a clean slate for a conversation, and the content isn’t used for training.
- Projects in ChatGPT are useful (may require a paid subscription).
- Claude allows linking to a GitHub repository, handy when getting AI help on a coding project.
- ChatGPT can help by searching through the titles and abstracts of, say, 200 papers from a Web of Science search, for the most relevant ones.
- Great for generating ideas for the title and/or acronym of a paper, proposal, or project.
- A good website for keeping up with AI tools: oneusefulthing.org.
- Watch out for agents that do things for us — e.g. planning and booking a holiday, replying to emails, scheduling meetings.
